Already There

Do you believe that the pursuit of a big goal can change your life? I tell you, it can, and even though I have not accomplished my weight loss goal yet (from a numbers standpoint) I feel like I’m already there. Really, in the most important ways, I am. Actions speak louder than words, and as I reflect on my day, I see that I already have what I want for myself. My big reason for wanting to lose weight was to have more energy and to feel stronger:

  1. I did a spin class before work – and it felt great.
  2. I made a delicious dinner – no diet food here!
  3. I am part of a generous community – full of inspiration.

You get there by realizing you are already there.

Eventually, I will reach my weight loss goal, and when that happens, I feel so accomplished. However, that future success does not diminish today’s joy.

A Weighty Matter

Does this sound familiar? It’s dinnertime, and by now the fatigue of a full day of work or activities has kicked in. You are hungry; but… good on you, you’ve done all the shopping and meal prep to produce a home-cooked meal. You’ve prepared an intentionally planned dinner designed to fit your plan. Take a bow, you’re a rock star.

Now comes the final step before you eat; it is maybe one of the most helpful things you can do on a weight loss journey and (when you’re hungry) may also be one of the biggest hassles: weigh and measure your portion.

Here are some tips to curve your hunger while preparing dinner, and some “pro-tips” to make it easier to get accurate portion sizes:

  • Have some veggie sticks at the ready to nosh on while you cook, this will take the edge off hunger
  • Stay hydrated as you cook, sip water – it helps
  • Serve dinner from the stove using measuring cups to dole out servings
  • Make it obvious and keep your kitchen scale next to the stove to weigh your serving

My hope for anyone reading this post is successful weight loss. If all the work has gone into meal planning and prep, then let’s all agree not to sabotage our efforts. Inaccurate portion sizes (either over or under) are not serving you well. I encourage you to do that last step, weigh and measure your portion sizes.

Earning My Keep

After finishing a challenging thirty-minute Peloton class, I was not looking forward to cooking dinner. After washing my face and changing my clothes, I checked my fitness app to see if I closed my “rings” and right at that moment a DoorDash notification banner popped up. Shaking my head, and giving a big sigh I headed down the stairs with as much enthusiasm as a kid diving into homework after school.

So much of weight loss success relies on determination and engagement. After cooking dinner, everyone at my house was surprised to see how tasty it was. Then it felt great (after) just as it is with so many different things. Working out feels great (mostly after). I’m never sorry I do these things but having the fortitude to actually get it done is sometimes REALLY hard to do.

Anything worth having takes care and consideration if weight loss is the thing you REALLY want – I hope you have the fortitude to see it through because you are worth every ounce of effort. You can do this, just don’t give in.
